He looked down at the fragile body in his arms as trickles of blood flowed out of the sides of her mouth. Mihira tried to swallow, catching the red liquid in her throat, gagging and coughing. Aaron shook his head at her and her eyes fluttered, too weak to open fully, too terrified to close. Gently, he took her hand in his and tightened his grip. Mihira tried to shake her head, speak, something other than gag, but nothing would come out except tears and blood. Aaron shook his head, cushioning hers with his other hand and knee.
"It doesn't get easier," he whispered, almost inaudibly. He raised his voice a little and leaned down to whisper in Mihira's ear, "I'll be waiting for you to return. Don't take too long this time, OK?"
Only the cackling of fires made noise where once the sound of war had raged. He felt the warmth fading fast as Mihira tried to speak, tried not to die. Tried to live. He tried to say something more, but his voice broke as emotion overcame him and, resting his forehead to hers, he heard the smallest whisper of a dying life, "Aaron..."
